In the rural areas of South Africa and Swaziland, we saw compounds like these. Modern square houses (to accommodate furniture?), plus rondavels used for storage and for the older women who suspect evil spirits live in corners.

To understand about the shantytowns, near cities throughout sub-Saharan Africa, you'll want to read about the various reasons they are constructed. This is Khayelitsha, in Cape Town. A mosaic in Khayelitsha which honors those who came before. This side depicts the dormitories where men had to sleep so they could work in the city nearby. Under apartheid, men without jobs and no women or children were allowed passes to come live near the whites-only cities. This separated the men from their families.
Toilets, water, and electricity are now provided to the shantytowns in South Africa. Brick houses are now slowly being built by the government to house the people, but there are years-long waiting lists. Meanwhile, some of the people who live here are happy to own anything at all.
