brooks461 > This is the town of Ushizu, where Jon lives. Jon is on the stairs approaching the Ushizu train station. Small mountains surround the town. Rice paddies are between the houses on the outskirts. Jon dressed as the Unabomer that day. We rode the train to Arita. We took the train wherever we went. The train system is amazingly efficient.
brooks461 > Quarry for porcelain clay in Arita, Pottery Town. Arita and the surrounding towns make the exquisite Imari porcelain, famous around the world. Obviously, they don't call it "China."
brooks461 > One of the many walls in the town which was made from bricks once part of the inside of kilns. Each brick is unique, with different glazes and melted spots on it.
brooks461 > We had the amazing good luck to have a private tour of a kiln, or pottery business.
brooks461 > This woman was painting the intricate designs on her vase. Each of the painters had another pot to copy. She protected the previous paint with the plastic on her hand.
brooks461 > Were the paper strips in the other plate some kind of guide for his work? I love that they use blue and white cups for their paintbrushes.
brooks461 > This man was one of four or five artists hand painting the designs on the pottery. He is 93 years old.
brooks461 > Note the blue and white ware in the window behind him.
brooks461 > This distinguished-looking gentleman, Mr. Tsuyoshi Fukagawa, was visiting the kiln we explored. He is the owner of another kiln, a producer of fine porcelain. He wanted to practice his English on us. He was proud to tell us that he had just met the captain of the US aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk.
