brooks461  > Greece: April-May 2007 > Athens
We spent the first two days in Athens, plenty of time to see what we wanted to see. Then we picked up our rental car at the airport and drove south to Peloponnese.

brooks461 > The Parthenon, of course, on the Acropolis (city hill). Interesting that the scaffolding doesn't show at night -- or the cranes. Been fixing up that place for hundreds of years. This is a long telephoto view from our hotel balcony, with tripod.
brooks461 > The real view from the Acropolis View Hotel, in daylight, without telephoto. Still very cool to see. You can orient yourself all over Athens by where the Acropolis is. Major retaining walls, although I don't know how old they are.
brooks461 > The Acropolis View Hotel from the Acropolis itself. Herodes Atticus theatre (corner showing at right); our room is indicated by the little white arrow under the left margin of my notes on the photo. Hotel is aptly named, but minimal.
brooks461 > Acropolis View Hotel Room. Not the most exotic, and the water quit in the middle of my shower, but fine for two nights.
brooks461 > The view from the Acropolis down the other side
brooks461 > Rooster Weathervane with Athens behind it. This is the other side of the Acropolis from our hotel. Lots and lots of apartment blocks, as far as the eye can see.
brooks461 > Peter and I set off (jet lagged and exhausted the first long day) to find a restaurant listed in Lonely Planet. None was open as early as we wanted. But we saw a LOT of them, all with empty tables.
brooks461 > This is part of the Plaka, in the shadow of the Acropolis, tourist and taverna area, plus gift shops. Lots of graffiti, which we also saw everywhere we went in Greece. Good thing we couldn't read it.
brooks461 > Still hunting for the perfect taverna.
