brooks461 > The train had stopped running for repairs, so we drove the road (at left on the map) from Diakopto to Kalavrita. We took this photo of the painted map in the train station in order to find our way. Thanks, Jon, for showing me (in Japan) how to use my digital camera to advantage like this!
brooks461 > In WWII, Nazis slaughtered every male over the age of 12 in the town of Kalavrita, furious that they couldn't find the resistance fighters. The clock on the left tower of this church, stays at 2:34, the time that the killing started. I did notice the two clocks, but didn't know why they were different until later. Kalavrita is high in the mountains. It has a ski resort. A beautiful town.
brooks461 > They put monasteries in the most inaccessible places.
brooks461 > Looking down into the gorge from the road to Kalavrita. We never did see a river.
brooks461 > As far as we were concerned, this said "rest stop." We ate our packed lunch at this overlook. The cafe was closed (preseason?). We shared the parking lot with a pile of bee boxes (next photo).
brooks461 > We saw a lot of bee boxes containing hives. Surely the olive and orange groves needed pollinating, and Greeks need honey for their yogurt and baklava.
