brooks461 > Kaikoura is a flat-topped peninsula reaching out into the South Pacific.  In late summer, the grasses on the plateau turn this golden color.  You can't tell from this serene photo, but where I was standing, on a water tower a the highest point, the wind was blowing like a banshee at sunset.

brooks461 > All around the edge of Kaikoura peninsula are odd rocks, limestone and mudstone.  We were advised to take our walk around the peninsula at low tide, so we could see the rocks, tidepools, and seals.

brooks461 > We surprised this seal, and he surprised us by roaring before we stepped into his territory.  It appears that lifting his head like this was a threatening move.  We stayed away.  He smelled like old fish.
brooks461 > I don't know what these limestone formations are called but they look like photos of Oregon's sea stacks.
brooks461 > This suggests how big those "sea stacks" really were.  They make a nice place to stop and rest. This group was on a walking tour with a guide.
