We used one of the two lanes of locks shown in the model at right. It took about four (overnight) hours to traverse them. The next morning we got our "tour" of the dam. Lots of security, and we never really got close. The reservoir of the Yangtze was 162 meters above sea level when we were there. By the end of October, 2009 the 410-mile-long reservoir will be full at 175 meters, drowning many acres of previously inhabited and farmed land, but providing electricity and much-needed flood control for the downstream areas.
